Green Light Candidates
Andrew Stimson (Greens)

I’m a retired high school teacher with a background in both education and business. I’m active in local community groups, Community Alliance (GC) and Wildlife QLD (GC & Hinterland).
If you’re worried about the cost of living, housing or climate crisis, you’re not alone.
As a result of the LNP and ALP’s lack of focus on the things that matter – housing, transport, schools and healthcare have become pressing issues. Rents and mortgage repayments are skyrocketing. Many local roads are near gridlock at times as public transport goes under-funded. I know first-hand how public schools may struggle as more money per student ends up in the private system. More than half of Australians avoid going to the dentist due to the cost, causing bigger issues down the road. Hospitals and GP clinics are overwhelmed, and accessing this care is more expensive than it has been in decades.
The climate challenges the Gold Coast, and the rest of Queensland, face are serious. Experts are telling us we must act quickly – much more quickly that those with vested interests would like. The scientific evidence is now very clear that unless we move to 100% clean energy by 2030 and cut carbon pollution to zero by 2050, our state will be hit by more climate-related disasters like floods, cyclones, droughts and heatwaves. It’s now past time our state declared a climate emergency and puts a stop to any new coal and gas mine approvals.
In a wealthy country like ours, everyone should be able to afford the basics: a home, food, and have access to world class health and education. We should be taking strong action on the climate and environment crisis, not backing more coal and gas.
By making big corporations and billionaires pay their fair share of tax, we can fund the things that matter, and make sure everyone in this country has what they need to live a good life. We can make trips to the GP free again and put dental and mental health into Medicare. We can tackle the cost of living crisis head-on by banning price gouging on essentials at the supermarket, freezing rents and capping increases and regulating the banks to bring down mortgage repayments.
We can make it happen by electing people who will fight for you, not vested interests.
We can’t keep voting for the same two parties and expecting a different result. Dutton will take us backwards and Labor is tinkering around the edges. We’ll keep Dutton out and get Labor to act.
If you want change, the first step is to vote for it.
This time, vote 1 Greens.
