Green Light Candidates
Elizabeth Johnston (Greens)

I’m a First Nations woman and former social worker. My early life was spent with my aunt and uncle in Duaringa, Central Queensland. In 1960, at the age of five, I survived the Medway Creek rail disaster near Bogantungan. My uncle, Lawrence Murray, was a hero that day, receiving the Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct after saving several injured passengers, including 15 children. Sadly, he passed away shortly after, and I was adopted by a local teacher and her husband.
As I grew up in both Brisbane and regional Queensland, I was deeply influenced by the cultural connections to the land and the guidance of my elders. These early experiences instilled in me a profound sense of social justice that has guided my work and my life. I spent many years working in mental health at Darling Downs Health, supporting people in need, and I also played a role in helping raise my daughter’s children in Dalby.
I’ve dedicated my life to advocating for the wellbeing of others, especially those in my community who are most vulnerable. It’s that same sense of social justice and care for the community that motivates me to run for Parliament. I believe everyone deserves access to food, housing, education, and healthcare.
Maranoa is facing a crisis when it comes to cost of living and housing, with too many people struggling to make ends meet. I’m campaigning to address these issues head-on. The Greens’ plan to tackle price gouging will lower grocery costs, and we will help ease the pressure of rent and mortgages by capping rent increases and providing cheaper mortgages. Furthermore, we will work towards making GP visits free and expanding Medicare to cover dental and mental health services, ensuring everyone has access to the care they need.
Throughout my life, I have been committed to the values of community, social justice, and ensuring no one is left behind. I am proud to be a part of the Greens, who share these values and work to make real, positive change. My aim is to put the needs of the people ahead of corporate interests and stand up for those who are struggling the most.
I’m running because we need action on housing, cost of living, and healthcare, and I want to be a strong voice for our community in Parliament.
Together, we can build a fairer, more just future for all of us.
