Omar Hassan (Victorian Socialists)

I’m a teacher working in public schools in Melbourne’s north. I’ve seen first hand how our community has been neglected by both Liberal and Labor governments.

The majority of Scullin residents are working-class people struggling with out of control inflation and high rents and interest rates. We need a government that takes real action to improve living standards, and to provide the services we need to give our kids a chance in life.

The Labor Party has held this seat since it was created more than 50 years ago. Many have supported them because they claimed to be a party that would fight for workers and migrants, and stand for peace. But Labor has betrayed that promise.

Today, the party prioritises the interests of big business over its working-class supporters. And in the past two years, Labor has supported and enabled the genocide being carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people.

They don’t deserve to represent the people of Scullin anymore. That’s why I’m running to represent Scullin at this year’s federal election.

I’ve spent many years campaigning for more funding for hospitals, schools, public transport and public housing. I have also been fighting for the Palestinian cause for decades, and have helped organise many pro-Palestine rallies and events since the beginning of the latest war.

At the upcoming federal election, I want to give you a real alternative to more Labor betrayal.

Loki Sangarya (Greens)

I’m an engineer, activist, and unionist, fighting for a future where everyone can afford to live and thrive in a safe climate. As a  water and wastewater treatment engineer, I have worked on the frontlines of climate risks in Victoria and New Zealand.

I’m disillusioned with the two major political parties who continue to take millions of dollars in corporate donations and put their corporate mates before you.

The major parties are failing to address the many issues that our community faces, including the cost of living, the worsening housing crisis, the lack of climate action, rising grocery prices, and the genocide in Gaza.

I’m proud to be part of a party that doesn’t accept corporate donations and is fighting for no new coal and gas, publicly owned renewable energy, cheaper groceries, mortgage rate caps, and a rent freeze.

We want to make big corporations pay their fair share of tax and fund things we all need, like dental and mental health into Medicare, government-built homes to rent and buy, cheaper mortgages, and 50 cent public transport fares.

In a wealthy country like ours, everyone should be able to afford the basics, and governments should actually solve the problems we face.

The electorate of Sculllin knows they deserve more, and I am ready to demand it. If you want change, it’s time to vote for it.
