Green Light Candidates
Michael Berkman (Greens)
I’m the Queensland Greens’ spokesperson for climate action, jobs, justice and the environment. You can see the full list of my portfolios here.
I moved from Toowoomba to Toowong for university and have lived in Brisbane ever since. My partner and I now live in Toowong with my three kids.
Before entering politics I was a public interest environmental lawyer working in a community legal centre, representing communities in court cases against companies like Adani. My work there focused on fighting thermal coal projects that threaten surrounding ecosystems, communities and farmland, not to mention our climate. This experience led me to realise that our local area, indeed our State, desperately needs a different kind of representation in the Queensland Parliament.
I was the first Greens representative elected to Queensland Parliament in 2017. As the local Member for Maiwar, I’ve seen the impacts of a broken political system at the ground level. While dangerous climate change is speeding up and inequality is getting worse, big corporations are growing their power and profits.
I’m proud to have worked alongside residents to secure funding for local schools, improve public transport routes, and stop the privatisation of our precious public places like Mt Coot-tha. I’m also fighting for change statewide, to put ordinary Queenslanders before corporate profits so that our system works for everyone.
We need representatives who are willing to stand up to big corporations and guarantee everyone a good life and a safe climate. I’m working for a society that provides an affordable home for everyone, good steady jobs, free universal health and education, fast and cheap public transport, all powered by 100% publicly owned clean energy.
Every week I’m out and about in Maiwar hosting community events, meetings, and pop-up offices – check out the events page on my website for more, and please come and say hi. I’m really committed to helping locals exercise influence over decisions that affect their lives, so I’d love to hear from you.
