Caroline Perks (Greens)

Growing up in the Perth Hills, I developed a deep bond with nature that has driven my lifelong commitment to protecting it. After uni, I started my career working on federal climate policy that actually reduced Australia’s carbon emissions – only to see all that hard work undone when the Abbott Liberal government repealed the price on carbon. That’s when I realised the two major parties aren’t actually interested in doing what’s best for people and planet if it doesn’t serve them and their donors.

While the experience was devastating, it was formative. I made the decision to join the Greens and devote my career to creating the kind of future we all deserve: one where refugees are welcomed and supported; disabled people are respected; men and women have equal rights; and everyone has a safe place to call home. 

I’m proud to call Maylands home. Our vibrant town centres, twilight markets, cherished green spaces, proximity to the peaceful Derbarl Yerrigan and rich cultural diversity make this a really special place to live. 

But our community is hurting. Everyday I speak with Maylands locals who are struggling under the weight of rising utility, grocery and housing costs. And just like I did at the start of my career, they’re seeing the major parties put the profits of their fossil fuel donors ahead of the needs of the community.

Maylands deserves better. 

The Greens have a bold plan to tackle the cost of living, housing and climate crises. We’ll pay for it by making the big corporations pay their fair share, and we’re already building a huge people-powered campaign here in Maylands to make it happen.
