As a health and safety trainer in the construction sector, I have seen enormous numbers of blue-collar and white-collar jobs destroyed in Geelong in the past 10 years. Geelong will be hard-hit by the closure of Ford in 2017. The government should be prepared to take over the factory and use it to make trains, trams and buses, or other necessary goods. We should not allow these jobs to be destroyed. Jobs can be created by building public infrastructure.
Successive federal and state governments have allowed our health, education and public transport systems to run down. This is why successive federal governments cut corporate taxes, so they can say that there isn’t enough revenue for the government to provide services. They can find $50 million for a Royal Commission into the unions to discover very little, while refusing to hold a Royal Commission into the well documented crimes of the Big Banks.
