Make Climate the winner of the New South Wales state election not a political party

Why does the NSW state election matter?

State governments have enormous power over decisions that affect the climate.

Here in Australia, we will have to keep 95 per cent of coal and gas in the ground to have any hope of limiting warming to 1½ degrees. Yet in New South Wales, since the start of the Paris agreement, the Coalition Government has approved at least 23 coal and gas projects, which will emit six times the greenhouse gases that Australia currently emits in a year. The red back spider’s web we have uncovered in Climate Sentinal News strongly suggests that we will be even worse off for climate action with a government led by Dominic Perrottet. When the Paris agreement was signed, the United Nations climate chief, Christiana Figueres, said: “We must keep fossil fuels in the ground. A safe future has no space for any new fossil fuel extraction.”

What can you do?

Up until the ballot draw you can research Green Light candidates and parties in your electorate page. Shortly after the ballot draw on Thursday March 9th you will be able to go to your electorate page and do a test run to practice making your vote for climate action more effective.

• To vote with the greatest effect in the House of Assembly, fill in every box on your electorate ballot paper using the Traffic Light Voting Guide.
• For your vote to have the maximum effect on the Legislative Council ballot paper use the Traffic Light Voting Guide to number every box above the line.

After March 9th a practical test and video will be available to help with your understanding how the Traffic Light System works in real time. You will be able to print your Electorate and Upper House Voting Guides. Using the Traffic Light Voting Instructions you can then fill in the blank boxes on each guide. Take all this to the voting booth and transfer the information directly onto your ballot paper for stress free voting.

If all this is too much trouble take your phone to the polling booth. Click on the link and bring up the Traffic Light Voting Guide for your electorate on the screen. Next step is to follow the instructions to promote climate action as you fill in the two ballot papers.
