Hi, I’m Melanie Searle

Right now,  our government is prioritising skyscrapers and sporting events while many in our community struggle to afford housing, food, and healthcare. I’m proud to be standing for the Greens to focus on the issues that truly matter.

Hartley is becoming increasingly unaffordable and as a renter, it is heartbreaking to think I may never buy a house in the area that I love. With an ageing population and a lot of younger renters moving into the area, I know I’m not alone and I am committed to addressing housing inequality in parliament to secure our futures.

I’m fortunate to live near the Klemzig interchange, enjoying the beautiful nature along Linear Park and the frequent public transport via the Obahn. This doesn’t stretch far into the electorate and leaves many residents with limited transport options. Roads remain congested, stressful and polluted daily. I am passionate about expanding public and active transport to ease these pressures and improve quality of life.

With experience across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, I have remained committed to social impact with roles in healthcare, homelessness and through studying International Development. Working in politics has given me further insight behind the scenes, from campaigning to parliamentary processes.

South Australia is one of the best places to live in the world, but with rapidly rising house prices, our environment and oceans in crisis, and poorly planned urban sprawl, our beloved lifestyle feels like it’s slipping away. Labor and Liberal put the interests of their corporate mates ahead of our community, but it doesn’t have to be this way. I will hold the major parties accountable and ensure our government truly represents the people of Hartley.

This moment demands strong climate action.

If you’re worried about the climate crisis, you’re not alone.

Millions of us are worried about rising power bills, environmental destruction and protecting our families from extreme weather.

Labor has approved over 25 more coal and gas projects while in office, while the Liberals’ commitment to fossil fuels remains stronger than ever.

Both take millions in donations from coal and gas corporations to fund their election campaigns. They’re working for their donors, not for people, our planet or the future.

With the Greens in the balance of power in the Senate, this parliament has a real opportunity to deliver strong climate action.

Our plan for ambitious climate action

Our wins on climate and clean energy have shown what’s possible. Now it’s time to push further and lead the world in the move away from coal and gas.

  1. Stop new coal and gas.
  2. Expand publicly-owned renewable energy.
  3. End the billions in handouts to coal, oil and gas corporations.
  4. End native forest logging.
  5. Lower power bills by transitioning to more reliable, clean energy.
  6. Subsidise solar & batteries for homes & businesses.
  7. End fossil fuel subsidies for all industries except agriculture.
  8. Save koalas and our wildlife from extinction.
  9. Create thousands of jobs during the transition.
  10. Provide grants and low-interest loans to help households and small businesses electrify, install solar batteries, and cut emissions and energy bills.
