Walter Kudrycz (Animal Justice Party)

I believe in a world where animals are treated according to fundamental principles of justice and where their autonomy and sentience is universally recognised through laws that meaningfully protect their wellbeing and that are properly enforced. Providing members of the public with choices in terms of pro-animal candidates at elections is one way of achieving this vision. I am standing as an AJP candidate as I want to ensure people who seek greater protection for animals in our legal and political systems have someone to vote for.

My background: I have a PhD in philosophy and history from the University of Sydney. I teach philosophy and history at the ANU’s centre for Continuing Education (CE). I pioneered the first ever animal ethics course offered by the CE and have since taught it several times both in person and online (during Covid lockdowns). In the course I cover various approaches to animal ethics and encourage students to think critically about how humans have treated and continue to treat animals, and why this should change, and how to argue persuasively for change. I have also guest lectured in animal law courses at the University of NSW since 2008, teaching animal history and ethics. I have assisted my partner in establishing and running the Animal Defenders Office, a community legal centre specialising in animal law, since its inception in 2013. I also support and attend public events held by other animal protection organisations such as Animal Liberation ACT. I would use these skills and experience to be a strong voice for animals.

James Cruz (Greens)

I’m one of your Greens candidates for Kurrajong in the upcoming election. I have called Canberra home since 2020, having moved here from Sydney for a quieter lifestyle closer to nature. Now living in Downer, I work as a Librarian at the National Library of Australia.

Growing up in poverty and living in public housing showed me the urgent need for a society that addresses inequality and the growing housing crisis. This experience is part of what drew me to the Greens—the only party firmly committed to ending homelessness and recognising housing as a fundamental human right. Since joining the Greens in 2011, I have been an active member of the movement, organising campaigns, engaging with our community, participating in activism, and standing as a candidate in the last federal election.

Isabel Mudford (Greens)

I have spent my entire life in the Inner North suburbs of Canberra, currently residing in Downer. My career has been dedicated to protecting and advocating for the rights of sexuality, gender-diverse, and intersex Canberrans through my work with A Gender Agenda, Meridian, and the ACT LGBTIQ+ Ministerial Advisory Council. Additionally, I have served as a policy advisor for LGBTIQ+ affairs and drug harm reduction in the Assembly. I am also in the final months of completing my PhD in Sociology at the Australian National University.

With a lifelong commitment to social and environmental justice, I joined the Greens in 2013 while an undergraduate student at ANU. As a former ACT head of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, I became involved with the Greens due to my deep passion for addressing the climate crisis. As the climate becomes increasingly unpredictable and dangerous, we will face not only ecological devastation but also extreme social, economic, and political challenges. The Greens are the only party that has consistently prioritised climate action alongside peace, social justice, and grassroots democracy.

Jillian Reid (Greens)

I am excited to be one of your Greens candidates for Kurrajong in the upcoming election, supporting the re-election of Shane Rattenbury and Rebecca Vassarotti. My husband and I have called Canberra home for the past three years, after living in Sydney and London. I love exploring our local community, enjoying visits to the Canberra Farmers Market on weekends, and being an active member of our community garden.

Formerly a high school teacher, I now work in sustainable investment, leading a team that assesses how environmental and social issues impact the financial well-being of our members and the wider community. The climate crisis is real, and it was my concern for our environment that inspired me to join the Greens over a decade ago. Today, I am driven not only by environmental issues but also by the intersection of environmental sustainability with social justice, particularly in areas like housing and healthcare. I’m proud of the Greens’ genuine commitment to justice and equal rights for First Nations peoples and Palestinian people, backed by meaningful action, not just words.

Shane Rattenbury (Greens)

I’ve lived in Canberra for over thirty years, and currently I’m a proud resident of the Inner North. I’m a keen runner and triathlete, having competed in events around the world including the Ironman World Championship held in Hawaii. I’m a big fan of 80s pub rock and Aussie hip hop, as well as photography, but my greatest interest is in making the world a better place.

I became an environmental advocate at a young age, inspired by campaigns to prevent ozone depletion, protect Antarctica and stop logging of native forests. I joined the Greens while studying at the ANU, graduating with a Bachelor of Economics and Law. Since then I’ve worked in various public service positions, as the International Political director of Greenpeace, and now as your MLA for Kurrajong and Greens leader.

It’s been an honour to serve you as your representative for so many years, as well as Speaker, Attorney-General, and other Ministerial roles. In 2020, we made history here in the ACT by electing 6 Greens MLAs to the assembly. Since then, we’ve shown that pressure works, securing nation-leading reforms in renters’ rights, climate, and justice.

Rebecca Vassarotti (Greens)

I’ve been one of your Greens MLAs for Kurrajong since 2020. And I am excited to again be one of your Lead Candidates for the 2024 Legislative Assembly election

I was born in the heart of Canberra at the old Canberra Hospital, and spent my childhood raised on the other side of O’Connor Ridge in Belconnen. For the last 11 years I have called Dickson my home, where I live with my partner and have raised our three children and our spoodle.

After graduating ANU with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Environmental Law I entered the public service, where I worked in urban services, environment, and finally the Bushfire Recovery Taskforce after the devastating fires in 2003. Prior to being elected as one of your two Greens MLAs for Kurrajong in 2020, I worked extensively in the community centre, including with ACOSS, CHC, the Racing and Gambling Commission, and 10 years as CEO of YWCA Canberra.

We’ve achieved so much in the last few years in Canberra. But in the midst of a growing Inequality crisis, now more than ever we need to invest in our public services to lift Canberrans out of poverty. In the face of a warming planet and an El Nino Summer, and with the memories of Black Summer in 2020 still fresh in our minds, we need immediate action to protect our natural environment from the threats of Climate Change.

Carolyne Drew (Animal Justice Party)

As a long-time member of the Ginninderra community and AJP candidate for the seat of Ginninderra, Carolyne wants to protect the environment that animals and people call home. With encroaching development as the population expands, Carolyne wants to bring about a new model of development based on kindness and compassion for both animals and people, and the environment itself, with the understanding that kindness and compassion underpins social justice and equity, important to the heart of any community.

A passionate advocate for animal rights, Carolyne has a particular interest in ending the annual kangaroo slaughter and banning landholder licences that allow killing of kangaroos in rural zones. In addition, Carolyne wants to end the scientific experimentation on animals such as the kangaroo fertility program and develop instead positive relationships to living with kangaroos in our green capital. Along with this she wants to ban the use of poisons as an animal control method because of its inherent cruelty and its threat not only to wildlife, but the well-being of peoples’ pets as well.

Further Carolyne wants to see the introduction of Veticare which will enable families to take better care of their pets when the need arises. It would allow them to choose treatment instead of facing the prospect of ending their pet’s life because of financial struggles.

Carolyne has a Bachelor of Communication and Master of Education. Carolyne has taught in the university education sector for over 20 years advocating for education as the pathway for change. Her life-long passion is to change the way we see our relationship with animals and the environment, from an often negative and destructive one to one of care and concern and that in caring for the environment and other animals we, in turn, are developing a healthier, more caring relationship with one another.

Here is your chance to vote for a kinder vision by voting number “1” for the AJP in Ginninderra.

Dr Lara Drew (Animal Justice Party)

Lara is an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Dr Lara Drew is a life-long activist for social justice and animal rights. Her advocacy work is grounded in a larger social justice framework inclusive of animals, people, and the environment.

For the past 16 years, Lara has led grassroots and public awareness initiatives to shine a spotlight on animal rights issues, including the atrocities of the kangaroo cull in the ACT. She fosters intersectional approaches to her advocacy, with a desire to create a more just and equitable world for all.

The annual slaughter of kangaroos, use of toxic poisons (like 1080 and Pindone), horse racing, chick hatching programs, and the abandonment of companion animals are just some of the problems in Dr Lara Drew’s community that she says need urgent fixing. As the “Bush Capital”, all animals should be protected from unwarranted abuse and violence. Lara wants to ensure that all animals are firmly on the political agenda in the ACT.

Combined with her advocacy work, Lara holds a Bachelor of Community Education and a PhD in Adult Education. She researches and publishes in the field of adult learning, social movements, activism and Critical Animal Studies. Her research informs and shapes her advocacy work and her decision to stand as your Animal Justice Party candidate in this election.

A vote for Lara, is a vote for animals, for people, and for the planet.

Jo Clay (Greens)

I’m your Greens MLA for Ginninderra. I’m thrilled to run for re-election in the 2024 ACT Legislative Assembly election.

A lifelong Canberran, I live in Macquarie with my partner, daughter and two dogs. I went to Weetangera Primary School and Radford College, then graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Creative Arts. I’ve worked in government, the private sector, the law, business and the arts. I try to use my skills to help the environment.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve been seriously worried about climate change. I always assumed that by the time I was an adult, someone else would have fixed the problem. But it’s worse than ever. I set up and ran a recycling company and a climate change project to help. I volunteered for the climate movement and with Pedal Power. In 2020, I decided to run as your Greens candidate for Ginninderra to try to change the system, not the climate.

I love Belconnen. I grew up here and I love watching my daughter grow up here in our thriving, culturally diverse community. But I’m worried that our public services haven’t kept up with our growing population. Ginninderra needs more investment in better footpaths, bike paths and crossings. We need more frequent buses now and a Light Rail line as soon as possible. We need a school in Belconnen Town Centre and better maintenance for our established schools and community sports facilities. We need more affordable housing. We need parks and playgrounds and genuine protection for our nature spaces. We need a healthy environment.

Since 2020 I’ve been advocating for these issues and more. My Greens colleagues and I have shown that pressure works. But we still have so much more to do. As your Greens candidate for Ginninderra in 2024, I will continue to speak up for our community. Join me and our movement as we fight to keep Ginninderra Green in 2024.

Dani Hunterford (Greens)

“I’m a 23-year-old policy and advocacy advisor, and also a Master’s student at the University of Canberra. After moving from the Northern Rivers in 2018, I’ve spent the past three years in the suburbs of West Belconnen, now proudly calling Belconnen Town Centre my home. Since childhood, I’ve been passionate about challenging the status quo and advocating for progressive change. That’s why I am excited to be one of your Greens candidates for Ginninderra!

As a young, queer, woman, my lived experiences have consistently driven my commitment to elevating diverse voices in politics. The cost of living and climate crises underscore the urgent need for policies that prioritise environmental sustainability and a fair distribution of wealth for my generation and those to come. I am dedicated to being a strong advocate for young people in Belconnen, speaking out against inequality, and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities in our electorate.

Before moving to Belconnen Town Centre, I was actively involved in the Macgregor community. The people of Belconnen deserve a representative who will fight for you and your community. Together, we can create meaningful change, but only if you vote for it.

Tim Liersh (Greens)

I’m one of your Greens candidates for Ginninderra in the upcoming election. They say you should be the change you want to see in the world, and that’s why I’m putting my hand up to be one of your candidates. With the world at several critical tipping points—a climate crisis, a growing cost of living crisis, and international conflicts—we need leaders who are ready to take action and get the work done.

Originally from Melbourne, I have called Canberra home since 2011 when I moved here as a public service graduate. I quickly fell in love with this city. My background is in data analysis with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, where I worked to demonstrate how statistics can tell the story of our climate crisis. A year after moving to Canberra, I began volunteering with the Greens and have been an active part of our party and movement ever since. As a former union delegate with the CPSU, I have long advocated for workers’ rights amid numerous challenges faced by the public service over the past decade. I am also a proud member of Canberra’s LGBTIQ+ community, celebrating the city’s diversity and strong sense of community.

I believe that politics should be for the people, which is why I am running in support of Jo Clay and Adele Sinclair’s campaign for Ginninderra this election. We have a bold and transformative plan to create a 20-minute bus network, ensure access to world-class healthcare without financial barriers, and build and acquire 10,000 public homes so everyone has a safe place to sleep at night. Change is possible, but only if you vote for it.

Adele Sinclair (Greens)

I’m one of your lead Greens candidates for the seat of Ginninderra at the upcoming ACT Legislative Assembly election.

Since 2014 I have called Scullin home, living here with my husband and dog. Born and raised in Western Sydney, I grew up in a single parent household where we lived in poverty for a decade, often relying on food parcels from charities. Through my childhood experience, I know the importance of a caring community and a public service that can provide crucial support when people are doing it tough.

I have been involved in the environment movement for over 25 years, and now, more than ever, I feel a deep sense of urgency about taking care of our environment and our plant. I co-founded Wombat Support & Rescue five years ago, and have been its Vice President ever since because I care deeply about protecting our native wildlife. I am proud to be one of the founders of the Scullin Community Group, formed to revitalise our suburbs’ ageing shops and use people power to turn the shops back into a community hub.

When I moved to Belconnen in 2001, I didn’t expect to still be living here over two decades later. My love for our friendly community and our natural landscape has kept me in the area. But while our electorate grows, the community services needed for our community are falling behind. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, Belconnen is becoming increasingly unaffordable to rent and buy, and housing availability is not keeping up with our population growth. Belconnen deserves better.

In 2020 the Greens made history by electing 6 Greens to the Legislative Assembly, including in Ginninderra with my colleague Jo Clay MLA. In the last term, the ACT Greens have shown that pressure works to deliver change. But we need to go further and faster to tackle the climate and cost of living crises. It would be a privilege to be one of your Greens MLA for Ginninderra.

The team at Vote Climate One encourages all candidates to support the 3Rs and the Climate Rescue Accord to underpin any decisions in the ACT Assembly relating to action on the climate emergency.

Riley Fernandes (IFC)

Riley qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Riley was born and raised in Tuggeranong and believes in standing up for others and doing the right thing, even if it means going against the status quo. As a second-year psychology student, musician, and mother, she is extremely passionate about healthcare, the arts, and building a thriving Canberra for future generations.

Dr Vanessa Picker (Independents for Canberra)

Vanessa qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Vanessa is a sportswoman and a former Young Australian of the Year finalist with deep ties to the Brindabella electorate. She brings a diverse mix of experiences from high-level cricket and military service to launching a start-up, working in government policy, engaging in grassroots activism, and academia.

Elise Searson (Independents For Canberra)

Elise qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Elise Searson grew up in Nelligen, where she spent her early years before her family moved to Batemans Bay. Growing up in a single-income family with four siblings, she quickly grasped the value of community spirit, resilience and the often underestimated role of mothers. Her father’s job at Telecom instilled in her a strong work ethic and a sense of commitment. Elise attended local public schools in Bateman Bay, where her talent in photography blossomed under the guidance of dedicated art teachers. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in photography and began her journalism career shortly after having her first child. However, life took an unexpected turn when Elise attempted to navigate the Federal Circuit Family Court of Australia and the criminal justice system. This experience exposed her to a deeply flawed, abusive process that enables perpetrators of family violence and child abuse, igniting a fire and driving her passion for advocacy and reform in family law and justice.

Now living in Canberra with her husband and two young children, Elise has founded an online community to empower and inform women while holding those in power accountable. Having spent many years supporting grassroots communities, she recognises the importance of using her privileged position to advocate for others.

Gareth Ballard (AJP)

As an active vegan of over ten years, I have been involved heavily in both animal activism and vegan outreach. I have spent countless hours volunteering at many local vegan animal sanctuaries, volunteered at rallies, helped leafleting and was on the Vegan ACT committee for several years. I also have strong views on social justice and improving access to mental health and alcohol and other drugs treatment in the ACT. I have a certificate IV in community services and a diploma in AOD and currently work at a residential rehabilitation facility. These have given me massive insight into some of the problems people face that could easily and cheaply be helped.

I’ve spent years advocating for animals volunteering for Vegan ACT (past committee member), Animal liberation ACT, and pretty much every local animal sanctuary. I helped to marshal the Dominion rally in Melbourne (the largest vegan animal rights rally in Australian history) and I have a strong network in both the vegan and animal rights community in the ACT.

The AJP values – Kindness Equality Rationality and Non-violence strongly resonate with me. I especially like the rationality value which links strongly in relation to the kangaroo cull. They are good values that I try to live by.

The local animal issues that I would like to highlight during the campaign as an AJP candidate are ending both the Kangaroo cull in the reserves and ending Horse racing in the ACT.

Other community concerns which I would like to highlight:

  • Public money going to private schools should go to public schools
  • Stopping the Rabbit destruction using pindone gas

Robyn Soxsmith (AJP)

Robyn qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

As a progressive voice for animals and the environment in the ACT, Robyn is proud to represent the Animal Justice Party.

As a long-time Kambah resident, Robyn has been a dedicated advocate for animals and social justice causes for over 25 years.

Now retired from the federal public service, Robyn devotes her time and experience to volunteering – including through direct action, running a women’s community social group, advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community, and sitting on animal committees.

Robyn is determined to bring an end to the annual kangaroo massacre in Canberra. She co-founded an association to expose the cruelty of the cull, which sees over a thousand kangaroos and joeys slaughtered each year. She says it is time for the ACT Government to take animal protection seriously, and legislate a permanent end to the slaughter of our native wildlife.

Robyn is concerned about the loss of Canberra’s reputation as the beautiful Bush Capital and, if elected, will prioritise the protection of the ACT’s wildlife and its reserves.

“The annual kangaroo cull is ACT’s disgrace. Thousands of kangaroos have been slaughtered at the hands of the ACT Government, with joeys regularly bludgeoned to death. I am a lifelong advocate for animals, people and our planet. Now I want to get into the crossbench so that we can secure real and long-lasting legislative change.”

Laura Nuttall (Greens)

I grew up right here in Brindabella, in Richardson, and it’s been my care for my community here in the South and the people around me that has always driven me forward. I became involved in politics to fight for refugee rights and faster action on climate change, and started to think about what needed to change locally when confronted with the dire state of my local shops in Richardson.

Before becoming your MLA for Brindabella, I graduated from ANU with bachelors in Asia Pacific studies and Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and then worked in ACT Libraries.

Then, when I became the first Gen Z MLA to any Parliament in Australia in 2024 in 2023, I put those values and causes into action. As a young, queer woman with ADHD, I didn’t see people like me in any Australian parliament, and I’m so glad that I can be a voice for communities that traditionally have very little say in the affairs of government.

It’s my passion for environmental and economic justice that has driven me to run for re-election as your representative for Brindabella, to put Tuggeranong first, revitalise our neighbourhoods and tackle the climate and cost of living crises.

Sam Nugent (Greens)

I’m excited to be your Greens candidate for Brindabella.

Born in Brisbane, I moved to Canberra in 2017 and have called Tuggeranong my home since 2022, when my husband and two rescue cats moved into our apartment in Greenway. I love Brindabella, from Lake Tuggeranong to the mountains in the south of the electorate, and our wonderful, diverse community.

As someone who fled domestic violence and experienced homelessness, I became drawn to politics with a desire to make a difference in equity for housing, healthcare and women’s services for victims and survivors of domestic violence. For 25 years I practiced as a psychologist and rehabilitation clinician, working nationally to assess and rehabilitate patients with complex physical injuries and illnesses combined with mental health conditions. Throughout my career I have been driven by caring for people, innovating solutions for their needs, and this is what drew me to the Greens.

Troy Swan (Greens)

For the past 25 years, I have been proud to call the suburbs of Brindabella my home, having first lived in Isabella Plains and now residing in Chisholm. Like many in our community, I have felt disillusioned with the current state of politics and society. This is why I have decided to step forward as one of your Greens candidates for Brindabella.

As a Registered Nurse, I have witnessed firsthand how the cost of living crisis and political inaction are straining our healthcare system. I am deeply committed to ensuring that everyone has access to free, high-quality healthcare when they need it. I am passionate about advocating for a more equitable and just future for all members of our community.

As your Greens candidate for Brindabella, I will be a strong advocate for our community, fighting for the changes we need. Together, we can build a better future, but only if you vote for it.
