Maja Chodorowski (Greens)
I’ve lived in Redlynch for four years with my husband and our band of small dogs. We are surrounded by mountains. Ringed by rainforests, Freshwater Creek runs through its heartland and the region is home to rare species of tree frogs, abundant birdlife including Blue Kingfishers and even a celebrity Cassowary that regularly trots the local walking track.
My background is in sales and negotiation from the corporate sector. I have a Commerce degree and used to travel around Australia selling jewellery to independent businesses. Wonderful times meeting diverse people from towns and cities. In my current role, I travel to the Cape communities, visiting stores, fixing problems and chatting to people along the way.
We are new to FNQ and I look forward to learning more about its ancient history including plant and land practices that mitigate flood risks. I am here to listen to First Nations leaders who teach culture and language.
We live in a flood prone environment. As your representative, I will work with stakeholders to future-proof Cairns’ homes. We need homes that are affordable, plentiful and well-built to modern standards. The Greens have a plan for a publicly owned developer to build 100,000 new homes available to everyone to buy.
Our region has missed out on state funding for too long. Roads are wearing out after unseasonal flood events, the Kuranda Range has degraded further following Jasper and the Barron River Bridge has been overdue for something more than a facelift for ten years. Locals and tourists use these thoroughfares daily to get to and from work as well as to explore our magnificent Tablelands and rainforests. They require real funding for timely, safe outcomes which are sympathetic to the landscape. I will fight to make this happen.
Unlike other parties, the Greens do not accept corporate donations, so I will work for you – not vested interests. We’ll make corporations pay their fair share and we will use that money to build public homes, fully fund schools, provide free childcare, healthcare and essential services. We’ll also freeze rents and cap increases.
The Greens will make groceries cheaper and ensure suppliers get a fair price, by stopping corporate price gouging. We’ll take back control of our economy by bringing key infrastructure and services into public ownership.
Gimuy is important in the Australian Landscape. It is beautiful, it is going places and our voices should be heard so that we don’t lose the things we love as we grow. I will push for conservation of ecosystems and wildlife with conservative developments and advocate for the Reef that supports us through tourism, fishing and industry.
