Climate Policy

The Goldstein community voted for climate action. The urgency of the task before us: to decarbonise our industries, our transport, our communities, and ensure integrity in climate policy, cannot be overstated.
This is an economic as well as an environmental and health priority; exploiting our unique solar, wind and mineral resources will set us up as a global clean energy superpower with clean, green manufacturing and the well-paid secure jobs that will underwrite our prosperity and the future of our children.
Comprehensive and ambitious climate action requires greater will and faster action in a range of policy areas, as well as community action.

Priorities

Integrity in climate policy
The priority must be on real emissions reductions, not protecting fossil fuel companies. Polluters should not be able to account their way to zero.
Fossil fuel companies must pay their share 

• A windfall tax on multinational gas companies is a must.
• Cuts in fossil fuel subsidies, and a more effective Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) to boost revenue and help support the transition.
• Some of the increased revenue to be redirected to programs, community and national for climate mitigation and adaptation, including household electrification.
• Some revenue to be applied to budget repair.

Decarbonising transport 
Australia lags the world on reducing transport emissions, and there are many opportunities to encourage the transition to zero-emissions transport.

• Tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs)
• The establishment of a national network of universal fast chargers
• Support and assistance to encourage the domestic manufacture of EVs.

Decarbonising communities
Electrification benefits households not just in terms of reduced emissions but also reduced costs.

• Incentives and requirements for property owners to offer and provide energy transition for renters.
• Incentives and requirements for property owners and developers to provide fast chargers for apartments.
• Incentives and requirements for new builds and incentives for retrofitting to create energy efficient homes.
• Specific energy efficiency requirements for all new government housing and public buildings
• Enhanced incentives to encourage homeowners to transition from gas to electric.
• Enhanced incentives to encourage home batteries to complement rooftop solar.
• Support for community-wide initiatives like Village Zero, Sandringham,

Achievements

• Secured the Federal Government’s 43% emissions reduction target as a floor, a minimum starting point for emissions reduction that can ramp up over time, not a ceiling.
• Pushed for amendments to the Safeguard Mechanism legislation that would ensure integrity in carbon credits based on Chubb Review into Australia’s carbon market.
• Launched the Village Zero project in Sandringham in partnership with Bayside Council and community traders and householders.
• Delivered sold out energy transition forum in Goldstein in partnership with local government to educate and inform the community on electrification.

Next steps

• Maintain scrutiny of the operation of the Safeguard Mechanism to ensure it will reduce the carbon emissions from our biggest polluters at the pace the government says it will.
• Insist the government act to fix its legislation if the timeline is not being met.
  Engage with government to ensure that big polluters cannot account their way to zero.
• Focus on the national security and stability implications of failure to act more comprehensively and speedily in addressing climate change in Australia and in the region.
• Advocate for a national road user charge to ensure equitable contributions to transport infrastructure and replace declining revenues from the PRRT.
• Work with local councils in Goldstein, the federal government and industry for a larger supply and more convenient EV fast chargers.
• Advocate for improvements to national planning regulations to require EV charging facilities in all new apartment developments, office blocks and shopping centre carparks.
• Advocate for revisions to tax arrangements to encourage property owners to upgrade energy efficiency in low- and middle-income rental properties.
• Work with local government and community to escalate take up of roof top solar.

Born and raised in Goldstein, I’m passionate about driving progressive change where it matters most. 

As a conveyancer and small business owner, I bring the experience of running a successful enterprise to my community advocacy. As your previous Greens candidate for Goldstein, I have a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to our community. 

Labor and the Liberals are both backing new coal and gas, driving the climate crisis. The Labor government has approved over 25 coal and gas projects – and now the Liberals want to delay climate action by going nuclear. 

I’m proud to be part of a party that is fighting for cheaper groceries, free GPs, affordable homes to rent and buy, and no more coal, oil and gas.

At the last federal election, Goldstein voted for a progressive change, and this election we can keep the major parties out and put our community first. I will fight for Goldstein every day, and I will have a team of Greens behind me doing the same.
