Andrew Wilkie (Elected Independent)

Andrew is supported by Climate 200
Climate change must be addressed much more urgently, including with net zero carbon emissions. The Government must re-write the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act, and include a climate trigger, if it’s to address the extinction crisis. In Tasmania, fish farms should be restricted to deep waters and only then as a stepping stone to onshore farms, native logging banned, and plans for the proposed Rosebery tailings dam abandoned.
Andrew’s responses to Vote Climate One’s questions:
- If you are elected to the next Federal House of Reps will your policy focus on support for real action on issues relating to the ecological and climate emergency?
I have been a long-term advocate for far more urgent and impactful action on the climate and ecological emergencies. Climate change must be addressed much more urgently, including with net zero carbon emissions by 2035. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act is also in desperate need of a re-write, including a climate trigger, if it’s to address the extinction crisis. If I’m re-elected, I will continue to advocate forcefully on these matters with whoever forms government.
- Are you prepared to use the application of the 3Rs, the Climate Rescue Accord and the Green Transition to inform, when relevant, your position and advocacy on legislation and policy?
Yes I am willing to use the 3R framework to inform my work and advocacy.
And his response to the other issues raised:
1.David Pocock’s Duty of Care Bill
I am a supporter of the Duty of Care Bill. It seems to me a straightforward prospect that decision-makers should consider the impacts of decisions on the health and wellbeing of children and future generations, and avoid decisions which would cause them harm.
2.David Pocock and Jacqui Lambi’s Whistleblower Protection Authority Bill 2025 (No. 2)
Our office actually took lead in drafting this Bill with the help of the Human Rights Law Centre, and I introduced it in the House seconded by Helen Haines. To their credit, Senators Pocock and Lambie moved the same bill in the Senate.

3. The Electoral Legislation Amendment (Electoral Reform) Bill 2024
I am a long-term advocate of electoral reform to improve the integrity of our electoral system. Sadly this Bill was mostly a major party stitch-up aimed at keeping independents locked out of the system.
For more on this Bill, see Andrew’s contributions in Parliament here: https://andrewwilkie.org/2024/11/funnelling-public-money-to-the-major-parties-under-the-guise-of-transparency/
I also introduced my own Electoral Reform Bill in 2022 which I think would have been far better. It would have required real-time disclosure, lowered the donation disclosure threshold to $1,000 aggregated, implemented caps on donations and electoral expenditure, expanded the definition of gift, and prohibited political donations from particular industries, including fossil-fuel entities, gambling companies, liquor companies, and the tobacco industry.
You can find out more about it here: https://andrewwilkie.org/2022/02/andrew-introduces-political-donations-reform-bill/
4. An independent review of staffing requirements for independent MPs and Senators who are not able to access the resources available to party parliamentary representatives.
I am supportive of an independent review of staffing requirements.
5. Gambling advertising reform
It’s way beyond time for the Government to stop kowtowing to the gambling industry, the media and the big sporting codes, and instead focus on protecting Australians from predatory industries by banning all online gambling advertising.

A fierce defender for her community, Janet’s lived experiences motivate her to stand up for those without a voice; she is particularly passionate about reconciliation, climate change, and social justice.
An active member of her community, Janet practices integrity in all that she does, and hopes to be the strong, caring voice that Clark needs.
TRAFFIC LIGHT VOTING GUIDE ASSESSMENT WARNING
The team at Vote Climate One may change our Traffic Light voting advice right up to shortly before election day. For instance it is very difficult to access ranking information from parties or candidates who have no public email, phone number or little internet profile. In these cases, we apply the precautionary principle with a Red Light ranking until further information and commitment to climate rescue comes to hand.
Please contact us if you have local information which could effect our rankings. Phone Rob 0n 0427 580 803
The major parties have let the Australian public down when it comes a serious policy commitment to action on the ecological and climate crisis. Consequently, we have assessed both the Labor party and the Coalition as Red Light parties. Nevertheless, in relation to our Traffic Light Voting guides, the Labor party has been ranked orange ahead of the Coalition which remains a stubborn Red Light proposition.
The House of Representitives
Labor is ranked Orange for the House of Reps. The opportunity for a Green Transition, sparked by the influence of a progressive cross bench holding the balance of power in a Labor minority government, is our bet bet for climate rescue.
The Senate
Likewise our senate Traffic Light Voting Guides also promote Labor ahead of the Coalition using an Orange Light status. This stategy will help discourage the worst senario for climate action which would result from a combative Coalition/right wing party majority in the senate.
