Here’s how you can make climate a compelling issue locally.

Matthew McMillan (Fusion Party)

Matthew qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light candidate

Matthew lives in the Adelaide CBD with his brother and has a background in commerce and finance, while working in management. He is currently working in the rail industry, saving lives, since leaving the hospitality sector.

Matthew believes in political responsibility and transparency for better democracy and a focus on integrity.

Why Fusion

I’m Matthew McMillan and I’m running for the seat of Adelaide with the Fusion Party Australia because I would like to see democracy here start working for the people. I had to put my hand up to put forward ideas and speak up for the people when I realised there wasn’t a great option available to advocate for our community. Being engaged with the community and representing people’s interests is the most important part of democracy, and I am committed to ensuring the voices of Adelaide are heard.

I’m an Adelaide local from the western suburbs, studied commerce and finance at the University of South Australia while working in hospitality. I’ve been working since my early teens in a variety of roles, but always ended up in leadership positions where I could resolve issues with the people around me and make improvements. Most recently I’ve been working in rail safety and security, ensuring the safety of everyone travelling.

Having worked in hospitality for so long, I met so many interesting people but always heard a common thread. Our systems are letting people down now. Almost everyone is struggling and for some reason, simple policy solutions are ignored. We need people who represent our interests. My vision for Australia is progressive and forward thinking, with clear ideas about how to improve. I’m hopeful enough people share my vision and can see the changes we can make together. Changes based on evidence and research with the best interests of the people in mind.

We need Ethical governance

Inequality is rampant and Australians are struggling. We need to build a society that is made for Australians, where everyone gets a fair go. I want to put forward policies that benefit all Australians as well as policies to keep our representatives accountable and transparent.

We can have a Climate Rescue

As natural disasters increase, extreme weather events and changing weather patterns affect us more, we suffer from those ongoing costs, further driving the cost of living. We can take commonsense policies to keep people safe and repair our climate.

To keep our individual freedoms

Recognising that society is created by individuals and the fundamental rights of democracy are bodily autonomy and free speech, I recognise that we need to safeguard those rights and enshrine them in law. I want to have a bill of rights to make sure our society is just and fair.

I’m a young person, a renter, and community activist. My political experiences comes from grassroots, community lead movements, fighting for things that people need and speaking truth to power.

Growing up in a working-class community on the Leferve Peninsula, I was confronted with the realities of economic and social inequality from a young age. My parents never owned our home growing up, so I was constantly aware that we were one bad inspection, or one rent increase away from being forced to find a new place to live.

I moved out and became a renter myself, and like so many people in my generation, I fear I’ll never own my own home, and just like me, my future children will never know the feeling of having a childhood home.

That’s why I’m running, to give a voice to people who are struggling to make ends meet, while corporations are making record profits.

The Greens want to take on the price-gouging corporations, tax them and fund the things we all need: a freeze and cap on rent increases, making sure you can see the doctor for free, wiping all student debt, and raising all Centrelink payments above the poverty line.

The major parties have let the Australian public down when it comes a serious policy commitment to action on the ecological and climate crisis. Consequently, we have assessed both the Labor party and the Coalition as Red Light parties. Nevertheless, in relation to our Traffic Light Voting guides, the Labor party has been ranked orange ahead of the Coalition which remains a stubborn Red Light proposition.

The House of Representitives

Labor is ranked Orange for the House of Reps. The opportunity for a Green Transition, sparked by the influence of a progressive cross bench holding the balance of power in a Labor minority government, is our bet bet for climate rescue.

The Senate

Likewise our senate Traffic Light Voting Guides also promote Labor ahead of the Coalition using an Orange Light status. This stategy will help discourage the worst senario for climate action which would result from a combative Coalition/right wing party majority in the senate.
