Janine Rees, a first-time candidate from Queensland, is running in the Division of Ryan. Approached by National Executive Ed Carroll to run, she jumped at the idea. The party’s focus on empathy and ethics intrigued Rees, who was delighted by the party’s thoughtful policy platform. “You have to have a seat at the table to create change … we need to broaden the base of the pyramid,” she said. As the Progressives candidate for Ryan, she was eager to advocate for integrity and transparency in politics, but the focus of women victims of domestic violence and assault was her focus. Sick of the patriarchal values which permeated politics, Rees is advocating for women’s equality.
