Melissa McArdle (Greens)

I recently ran as the candidate for Moorooka in the Council elections where the Greens secured a swing of 7.8%, defeated the LNP and came in second with 37.8% of the two-party preferred vote.

I have a Master of Business with majors in Economics and Strategy. I have completed Post Graduate studies in Contract Law, Management and Legal Mediation. My combination of formal qualifications and lived experience means that I have the skills to make a real difference for Toohey in State Parliament.

I have extensive experience engaging people from multicultural backgrounds. Having worked as an International Business Development Manager in the university sector, I have a thorough knowledge of the issues that affect families, young professionals, migrants, students, renters, people living with large level debt and housing insecurity, and understand the impact the high cost of living has on our communities.

I am a working mother of two teenagers who are questioning the cost of education, are fearful of accumulating debt and believe home ownership will be unachievable for their generation.

I have seen the impact of poor political leadership and the dramatic impact it has had on our community.

People are struggling with the cost of living. Rents and mortgages are out of control. People are paying more than half their wages trying to maintain a home. And many more are living in tents or cars.

People in our community cannot afford meals and have trouble feeding their families. Others can’t buy medication or visit the doctor.

This is unacceptable in a country as rich as Australia.

We have an abundance of oil, minerals and gas. The royalties from these and other industries should be paid to Australians to reduce the cost of living and provide the basic services every family needs.

We need true leaders in government to ensure this happens.

The Greens are ready to make an impact in our electorate. We will make big mining companies and multinational businesses pay their fair share and use this to fund all the things Queenslanders need to live a good life.

We will fix the housing crisis by freezing rent for 2 years, cap rent increases ongoing, and give renters a guaranteed right to lease renewal. We’ll also build 100,000 well-designed public homes to rent or buy for below market rate.

We will drive down prices by breaking up the Coles and Woolies duopoly and stop corporate price gouging for essentials.

We’ll tackle the cost of living for families by making childcare, kindy, public schools and TAFE truly free and well-funded, including public school excursions and technology costs.

We’ll clear the elective surgery waiting list and fix emergency departments by properly investing in public hospitals. We’ll establish free public GP clinics so everyone can see a bulk-billing doctor.

We’ll tackle the climate emergency. Since coming to power, Queensland Labor has approved 38 new coal mines, and both Labor and the LNP want to open up 15 more. We’ll stop new coal and gas mines, invest in 100% public renewables by 2030 and establish new industries in green manufacturing.

The state election is our chance to make a real difference to the lives of Queenslanders. Join my campaign and together, we can make it happen.

Ahmed Abdulhamed (Greens)

As an engineer, father and community advocate, I am deeply passionate about our community’s success. I actively participate in initiatives such as the “Buy Nothing Project”, neighbourhood watch, and Amnesty International projects to make our communities safer and more prosperous.

I work in software engineering, with a track record of working with ethical companies that connect and secure the world around us. My personal experiences have given me a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people in our community struggling with ever increasing rent and mortgage repayments, housing insecurity and high living expenses.

Stretton has one of the highest rates of migrants in Queensland, with diverse languages spoken at home. We deserve to be represented by someone who understands our challenges.

In Queensland, we have some of the best teachers and state schools, yet they’re underfunded by more than $1bn annually. This results in overcrowded classrooms, disengaged students, and more out-of-pocket expenses for families and teachers.

Our public health system is struggling with increased physical and mental health impacts in the aftermath of a global pandemic, leading to unacceptable rates of nurse and staff burnout.

Our state has extraordinary wealth, which should be used to ensure a sustainable and fair future for all of us. That’s why the Greens will take on the big corporations that are ripping off Queenslanders and make them pay their fair share. We’ll freeze rents and tax big corporations fairly to build 100,000 public homes. We’ll also use that money to fully fund schools, free childcare, hospitals and essential services.

The Greens will make groceries cheaper by breaking up the duopoly power of Coles and Woolies and stopping corporate price gouging for essentials. We’ll cut power bills with 100% publicly owned renewable energy, and take back control of our economy by bringing key infrastructure and services into public ownership.

I’m calling for unity and hope for everyone in our community, fighting racism and prejudice, especially for those who are vulnerable or at risk. As your representative, I will address these issues by implementing rational plans and policies guided by expert advice and best practice.

Labor has failed to take action, and the LNP don’t have a better alternative. Here in Stretton, people know that the status quo is not serving our community, and we need change. Our community deserves genuine representation, not influenced by big corporations. The Greens don’t take corporate donations like other parties do, so as your MP, I will focus on your needs and concerns, not on vested interests.

I am standing for Stretton because I believe in our community and its potential. I’m asking for your support this October because I know that together, we can bring about the change our community needs.

Jessica Lane (Greens)

I am a bonafide ‘north-sider’ – born in Redcliffe, grew up in Boondall and have lived in Aspley and now the lovely Stafford Heights. My background is in secondary education and, over the last 15 years, I have taught thousands of students from primary school through to tertiary level.

I have lived in the Stafford electorate for 9 years with my husband, David, our two young daughters and our dog, Dee-Dee. On weekends, you will often find us – coffee in hand – hanging out at any of the beautiful local parks. If you see us, please come and say ‘hi’.

I believe that receiving quality education and skills-development should never be a privilege for the rich. Building and maintaining an equitable, world-class, taxpayer-funded education system – from early childhood through to tertiary – should be at the very centre of government policy. The future of our state literally depends on this. Yet our education system is in crisis and the current government has done little to address it.

I believe that we need to get more teachers elected to parliament to lead the way and help create a world-class education system right here in Queensland.

The majority of students in the Stafford electorate are educated in public schools, yet these schools continue to receive funding beneath the minimum school resourcing standard (SRS). For far too long, the state government has relied on the good will of parents and teachers to fill in the gaps. This is unacceptable, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis.

While our local schools fundraise in order to afford things like air-conditioning, mining companies are only paying 9% in royalties. That’s less than the GST. These natural resources belong to all Queenslanders, so all Queenslanders should benefit – particularly our children. Queenslanders could have everything they needed if mining companies paid their fair share.

That’s why the Greens will take on the big corporations that are ripping off Queenslanders. We’ll make them pay their fair share and use that money to build 100,000 public homes, fully fund schools, free childcare, hospitals and essential services. We’ll also freeze rents and cap increases.

The Greens will make groceries cheaper by breaking up the duopoly power of Coles and Woolies and stopping corporate price gouging for essentials. We’ll cut power bills with 100% publicly owned renewable energy, and take back control of our economy by bringing key infrastructure and services into public ownership.

Trust in the major parties is at an all-time low – and it’s easy to see why. But we have a chance to make a big difference to the political status quo. The Greens don’t take corporate donations like other parties do, so we’ll represent your needs – not wealthy donors.

I was drawn to teaching because I love making communities better, stronger and more connected. This year, don’t give your vote to yet another ‘career politician’ – give it to a teacher. This teacher.

Amy MacMahon MP (Greens)

For the past four years, I’ve been fighting for full funding for state schools, fighting to protect green space, fighting for a freeze on rent increases, and for more investment in public housing to tackle the housing crisis.

I’ve been fighting to make sure multinational mining corporations pay their fair share in royalties, so we can fully fund our essential services, public hospitals and schools. I’m also the Queensland Greens spokesperson for Housing, Health, Education, Treasury, State Development, and Seniors and Disability Services.

Labor and the LNP have both put the interests of big business ahead of the interests of people. Corporate profits continue to soar, while everyday people struggle with stagnant wages, high rents, rising cost of mortgages and electricity, and pressure on our health systems. But it doesn’t have to be like this.

I know the power that everyday people have when we work together. We won South Brisbane in 2020 after a huge, grassroots campaign – we had hundreds of volunteers out talking to people at their doors and on the phone, about the issues that matter to them. And we pulled off an historic win.

In South Brisbane, the community fought against Labor’s plans to rebuild the Gabba Stadium, which would have destroyed a local school, a local park, and would have wasted billions in public money. The local community was treated as unimportant and expendable by the Labor state government. After a three year campaign, led by the local community, and supported by the Greens, the Labor government finally backed down, and scrapped their plans. This was a huge win.

We know that when everyday people work together, when we connect on the issues that matter to us, we are powerful. More powerful than big money, more powerful than big corporations, more powerful than the major parties.

We can make sure that essential services like healthcare and education are properly funded. We can put our electricity network back into public hands. We can create thousands of jobs building and running the public infrastructure we desperately need. We can make sure every Queenslander has a home.

To do this, we need representatives in parliament ready to fight alongside everyday people. Representatives who are ready to take on the property developers, the banks, the mining multinationals and the major parties. Ready to make big corporations pay their fair share. Ready to put power back in the hands of everyday Queenslanders.

I’m a renter in Kangaroo Point. I went to Brisbane State High School and have been part of the South Brisbane community for over 20 years. Prior to becoming an MP, I worked in community engagement in the local government sector, making sure that communities have a real say on issues that affect their lives.

I am privileged to represent South Brisbane, and I’m excited to continue to fight alongside this community.

Nicole Thompson

Tamborine Mountain has been my home for 16 years. I love the beautiful countryside, natural environment and close-knit communities of our region.

As a registered nurse and a midwife of 30 years, I get the opportunity to talk with locals regularly and hear their concerns. Many people are struggling with the cost of living – the price of everything has gone up, groceries, electricity, rent and mortgages.

This is the result of decades of the major parties putting big business before everyday people like you and me. It doesn’t have to be this way.

The Greens will take on the big corporations that are ripping off Queenslanders. We’ll make them pay their fair share and use that money to build 100,000 public homes, fully fund schools, free childcare, hospitals and essential services.

We’ll also take real action on the cost of living crisis. We’ll freeze rents and cap increases and make groceries cheaper by breaking up the duopoly power of Coles and Woolies and stopping corporate price gouging for essentials. We’ll cut power bills with 100% publicly owned renewable energy.

Our region is famous for its natural beauty and productive farmland, both of which are vital to keep our tourism industry thriving. That’s why I’m supporting our community to fight the proposed incinerator earmarked for Bromelton. An incinerator does not belong in an area that grows food!

Scenic Rim needs protection from pollution – not only for its agriculture, but for the natural beauty of the environment, our tourism industry and the locals who call this place home. The waste industry has too much influence over Labor and the LNP – the Greens will stand with the community to stop this inappropriate development and find sustainable waste management solutions.

Over the next ten years there will be an increase in the population in South East Queensland. With many in our region already in housing stress, we need leaders in Parliament that will help solve the housing crisis with care – not let profit-hungry developers destroy our beautiful area. Housing needs to be affordable, close to public transport and designed so that people feel like a part of their community.

Unlike Labor and the LNP, the Greens don’t take donations from big corporations so I will represent you, not vested interests. So join me, and together we can change the state of current politics. It’s time the government looked after everyday people, not big corporations.

Chris Simpson (Independent Democrats)

Chris qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate.

I will support the use of the 3Rs and the Climate Rescue Accord to underpin decisions I will make in the Queensland legislative Assembly in relation to action on the climate emergency.

We simply cannot “tinker around the edges” any longer.

We need dynamic action NOW with evidence based, engineering and construction solutions that lead to renewables for generation and long term storage; both hydro and battery as a core focus.

Rachel Kennedy (Greens)

For as long as I can remember I’ve cared deeply about the world around us. I became involved in politics because I believe a better future is not only possible but essential.

As a young person and recent graduate, I’ve already met and spoken to so many Brisbane northsiders with my work in the busy hospitality sector, coaching students in public speaking and debating, and in community advocacy including volunteering for domestic violence prevention with local organisations in Sandgate.

Right now, politics is failing our communities. We are in a climate, housing and cost of living crisis and the old parties refuse to fight for the future we deserve.

A future that sees genuinely free and fully funded health and education, that sees meaningful long-term cost of living relief like free and frequent public transport, a rent freeze, lower power bills and real action on the climate crisis by transitioning to 100% publicly owned renewable energy.

We deserve a future where our parliament is as diverse as our communities in Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Brighton, Bracken Ridge, Deagon, Taigum, and Fitzgibbon, and where our politicians stand up for what really matters. I love our local community where we look out for our young, old, and everyone in between. I know we can put people before profits with fully funded health, education, and public transport, and where everyone has a place to call home.

The Greens don’t take corporate donations which means I will fight for you, not vested interests like big corporations, property developers and coal billionaires.

This election we have the chance to transform politics in Queensland. Will you help us fight for a future for all of us?

Liela D’Rose (AJP)

Leila is an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Liela is driven to bring an end to animal cruelty and to advocate for stronger and enforceable protections and support systems.  She is dedicated to promoting ethical, sustainable practices that benefit both people and animals.

Her professional background in Human Resources and passionate involvement in Vegan Events, has afforded her the opportunity to support the management of the QLD Vegan Markets.

Suzanne Spierenburg (LCQ)

Suzanne qualifies as an Outstanding Green Light Candidate.

The Legalise Cannabis Queensland Party endorses the vision of the Climate Rescue Accord, to stop and reverse global heating, and recognise the 3Rs as commensurate action to achieve that vision, and have adopted or are on the path to adopting a comprehensive suite of the 3Rs in their policies.

Policy Statements

  • We care about the future of our planet. A greener bent will give our children and our grandchildren clean/er air and clean/er water. Each of us must try to do our part to innovate, change and respect the environment. Our lives and future depend on it!
  • Plastic waste chokes the planet. Petrochemicals are found in a wide array of household items, from plastic wrap and rubbish bags to plastic bottles. Hemp based plastics decompose in months rather than decades
  • Bio-futures is one of the opportunities that will support future economic development, open the door to new investment and grow employment in regional areas of Queensland
  • Bio-products offer a renewable and environmentally beneficial alternative to existing conventional chemical and fossil fuel refining processes
  • Transitioning to biofuel power stations would lower emissions and create a carbon neutral cycle and thus reduced greenhouse gasses.
  • Reducing our own dependence on mining will protect our water tables from contamination. Fracking would be completely off the agenda

Kristie Lockhart (Greens)

I am a mother of three and a staunch environmental and animal welfare advocate.

I am also a long-term health professional, having worked in pathology laboratories in a range of technical, clerical and management roles. Over the last 22 years, I have worked across many different specialties, in both public and private sectors. I have an in-depth understanding of the industry and particularly, the challenges faced by front-line public healthcare workers, due to under-funding, staff shortages, fatigue, stress and burnout.

The Greens have a comprehensive economic plan that will provide relief from the unprecedented cost of living crisis that we are experiencing.

We will take on the big corporations that are ripping off Queenslanders. We’ll make them pay their fair share and inject billions of dollars into the budget to be spent on building 100,000 public homes, free healthcare, free public transport, free education and community and youth programs. We will also freeze rents and cap increases, and make groceries cheaper with caps on essentials.

As somebody who wears many hats – I’m a mother of children at primary and secondary schools, a daughter to ageing parents, a continuous shift worker in the public healthcare setting and environmental/peace warrior – I know these things are attainable and will have a marvellous effect on our community. People will be able to live more comfortably, get from one place to another more easily, learn, get the medical services they need and feel connected to their community through hobbies and sporting groups.

I will serve our community, and fight for what is right. I will listen to you and stand up for what matters to you. The Greens don’t accept corporate donations like the old parties, so I will work for you, not vested interests.

I will not support genocide. I will not sell-out our precious habitat/landscapes to property developers who only want to make massive profits. I will support community consultation on infrastructure projects and ensure that our precious environment is never destroyed in the process.

Let’s send a message to the old parties that we are fed up with their inability to provide long-term solutions to the huge problems that we face as a society. If you want to see positive change in the Redlands, join my campaign and vote Green in October.

Will Simon (Greens)

I am a lifelong Redcliffe local and community campaigner, and I am super excited to be your Greens candidate this election.

There are so many big issues that need to be tackled head-on if we are going to make Redcliffe and Queensland a better place for us all to live in.

Our community is struggling – the lack of affordable houses, massive rent increases and mortgage payments, skyrocketing homelessness, supermarket price gouging, wages not keeping up with inflation and the destruction of our natural environment.

This election is our chance for change. The Greens will tax big corporations fairly and use that money to build 100,000 homes, make our schools and healthcare genuinely free, stop price gouging and lower power bills by transitioning to 100% publicly owned renewable energy as well as free public transport.

I will be your voice and bring attention to many of the local issues we face on the Peninsula. The Greens don’t take corporate donations so I will represent you, not vested interests.

Will you help be part of the change in Queensland?

Maureen Brohman (AJP)

Maureen is an Outstanding Green Light Candidate

Maureen is compassionate, hard working and dedicated to creating a better life for all.

As an AJP candidate, Maureen is continuing her years of advocacy for other animals with whom we share our planet Earth. She has lived and worked in the Moreton Bay Shire for more than 30 years and  worked as a primary school teacher for most of that time. She is a seasoned animal advocate, attending demonstrations and committing many years to the rescue of wildlife, dogs and birds in the  region.

Sonja Gerdsen (Greens)

I am a mum, a therapist and peer worker who works in the mental health and domestic violence sector and am currently studying a Masters in Social Work. I work and volunteer in the local community, supporting and advocating for people and families, especially those failed and left behind by our complex government-run systems.

I grew up in Pine Rivers and decades later; I am now raising my children here. As a parent of four, I understand the pressures of everyday life and how it impacts us every day as individuals and a community. We’re going through a cost of living and housing crisis, youth safety issues, lack of affordable education and mental and physical health supports and the uncertainty of a future with the effects of climate change.

Every day I see how disheartened people are by the constant struggles they face. The two major parties continue to fail those they are meant to be working for – their community. Instead, they prop up their corporate donors.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The Greens don’t take corporate donations like Labor and the LNP, so we work for you – not vested interests.

We will make big corporations pay their fair share in tax and then use that revenue to build 100,000 public homes. We will freeze rents and cap increases and make groceries and power bills cheaper. We will make education genuinely free and provide access to quality physical and mental healthcare and youth and community support.

I am committed to fostering an inclusive community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and value that is the key to enabling us all to thrive personally and collectively.

With deep empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by families, students, those with a disability, mental health issues, and adversity, I am passionate about demonstrating a way to transform the social landscape of Pine Rivers and to contribute meaningfully to our community and beyond.

It’s time we change things, and vote for members of Parliament who listen, understand and represent the people and needs of our community. Change can happen, when we elect those with heart, compassion and determination to do the work that’s needed.

Today, we can work together for a better tomorrow. Change starts with us all.

Callen Sorensen Karklis (Greens)

I am a student and local Quandamooka salt water man originally from Straddie (Minjerribah). I have lived and worked in this area for most of my life. It’s an area I care about and know it’s worth protecting, not only because it’s sacred to my First Nations ancestors but because it’s an area I know we all love to call home because of the uniqueness of the bayside.

I have worked in the local community in retail, public service roles, and in advertising as well as several local volunteer organisations. I realised several years ago I had to get involved in politics after I became concerned about the future of our local environment, especially at Toondah Harbour.

I have first-hand experience of the cost of living crisis and know how tough the rental market has become. Everything is so expensive, it’s making it impossible for many people to make ends meet.

Labor and the LNP keep putting big corporations and their profits before everyday Queenslanders. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The Greens will take on the big corporations that are ripping off Queenslanders. We’ll make them pay their fair share and use that money to build 100,000 public homes, fully fund schools, free childcare, hospitals and essential services.

We’ll also take real action on the cost of living crisis. We’ll freeze rents and cap increases and make groceries cheaper. We’ll break up the duopoly power of Coles and Woolies and stop corporate price gouging for essentials. We’ll cut power bills with 100% publicly owned renewable energy.

The Greens will protect Toondah Harbour and other environmentally significant areas, to make sure we don’t lose their natural beauty to over-development.

As your representative, I will share your concerns on Birkdale land being considered for a White-Water facility. We know this decision would affect liveability for Redlands residents, including in Oodgeroo.

Our community deserves a representative who will listen to you and represent your needs in Parliament. I will celebrate our diversity and bring our community together. And unlike Labor and the LNP, the Greens don’t take corporate donations, so I work for you – not vested interests.

Will you join me?
